MTTC Social Studies (Secondary) (084) Practice Test

The central idea is that real freedom after emancipation meant economic independence and self-sufficiency. Owning land gave a family control over their labor, the ability to feed themselves, and the chance to build wealth across generations, reducing dependence on wage labor dictated by others and the risks of debt and tenancy. When land ownership is secure, people can chart their own economic and family future, which many former slaves saw as the true foundation of freedom. The other options—moving north, joining a black church, or learning a skilled trade—are valuable and important for opportunity and community, but none offers the lasting independence that owning land could provide. That’s why owning one’s own land is considered the defining step toward lasting freedom in the postwar era.
